Pop

Randy Newman made a bargain with the devil--well, at least with his Orange County fans--a few years ago at the Coach House, when he promised in an unguarded moment that he would someday come here and perform his then-unfinished musical, “Randy Newman’s Faust,” in its entirety. We’re still waiting, big guy. Grand as last year’s “Faust” release was, no one will complain if Newman strays into a wonderful catalog that goes back to 1968 and reflects a balance between the caustic and the sympathetic that has made him pop’s preeminent satiric songwriter. On the film-music front, where he also has excelled, Newman’s current opus is the score for the hit “Toy Story.”

A tongue-in-cheek rip-off of the name of a famous art fair in Kassel, Germany, “Documenta” at the Huntington Beach Art Center (through March 31) nonetheless is dead serious about presenting some of the best younger artists in Southern California.

Comedy

Kathleen Madigan--the diminutive Midwest-bred comic whose “Sarcasm Lite” stand-up routine often launches her head first into such heartland topics as bowling (“I was drunk and needed shoes”), hunting and cow tipping--laughs at people who tell her about relatives or friends who smoke and drank, only to die of something unrelated. Her father, for example, points to a hard-drinking, heavy-smoking uncle who was hit by a bus. “But Dad,” she says, “He was drunk, in the middle of a highway and chasing his lighter.”
