Arts Plaza Wins an Award for Architecture

The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza has received a top architectural award from the New Mexico chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The monolithic performing arts center and city hall complex was one of three buildings out of 52 projects chosen to receive the chapter’s Honor Award. It was designed by architect Antoine Predock and his Albuquerque-based firm, Dworsky Associates.

Predock could not be reached for comment Thursday, but City Manager Grant Brimhall said at Tuesday’s City Council meeting that he was proud that the city’s signature building had been chosen for such a prestigious prize.

Ed Johnduff, the city official who managed the construction of the Civic Arts Plaza, said he was not surprised that the building had garnered praise in architectural circles.

“It is an award-winner,” he said, only half-joking. “We always thought we would get some awards for it.”
