West Covina police are searching for a man who left a healthy newborn baby boy on the porch of a home Thursday night and then drove off in his pickup truck.

A woman, who was not identified by police, heard a knock at her front door around 5:30 p.m. and upon opening it discovered a Latino baby boy still with his umbilical cord attached, wrapped in a blanket, said West Covina Police Officer Rudy Lopez.

The man who abandoned the baby was seen fleeing as the woman answered her door in the 1500 block of East Stuart Avenue, police said.

Det. Tom Garcia said the police have few leads on the man, who was last seen driving eastbound on East Stuart Avenue in an older-model pickup with a loud engine.

The baby was taken to Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina after the woman who discovered him called 911. Doctors determined that he was only 2 or 3 hours old when abandoned.

“The baby is in excellent health and should be turned over to the Department of Children Services” said Catherine Koetters, hospital spokeswoman.
