THE WORLD OF THE SEA OTTER ...

Share

THE WORLD OF THE SEA OTTER text by Stefani Paine, photographs by Jeff Foott (Sierra Club Books: $18; 132 pp.). During the 18th and 19th centuries, the sea otter was hunted to near extinction for its luxurious pelt. (An otter skin has more fibers per square inch than an entire human head of hair.) Protected by international law, the otter has gradually returned to much of its original habitat but remains threatened by pollution, oil spills, depleted food supplies and competition with humans. This handsome book demonstrates the undeniable appeal of this hardy aquatic survivor.
