CHOC Plans to Expand Bilingual Health Program
Children’s Hospital of Orange County plans to expand its bilingual health education program at its new clinic in Anaheim.
The project will be modeled after a similar one that CHOC operates in Santa Ana.
Funding will come from a $9,000 grant given to the hospital late last week by Aetna Health Plans of California Foundation.
Only about 30% of 2-year-old children in Orange County’s Latino communities have received the full series of immunizations against childhood diseases, according to CHOC research.
Overall, about 60% of children in Orange County are up-to-date on their shots.
CHOC, based in Orange, opened the Anaheim clinic in September with a limited number of classes for parents, spokeswoman Jennifer Stameson said.
About 8,000 patients are expected to use the facility during its first year of operation, she said.
All staff members in the Anaheim clinic speak Spanish, Stameson said.
Nurse practitioners are able to offer advice on immunizations, and classes soon will be offered in the basics of baby care, home remedies for common childhood illnesses, nutrition and hygiene.
