Suspect Arrested in Crime Spree

Sheriff’s deputies Wednesday arrested an Oxnard man for his role in a crime spree last November, authorities said.

Roberto Monzon, 31, was booked into County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery, attempted robbery and auto theft.

The incidents began about noon Nov. 18 when Monzon allegedly stole a car from a shopping center in Ventura. Deputies suspect Monzon drove the car to Saticoy, where two armed and masked juvenile accomplices held up Yeto’s Market. The two juveniles were arrested in the stolen car shortly after the burglary, deputies said. But Monzon, who initially drove the getaway car, switched to another car before the juveniles were arrested, deputies said.

Deputies suspect Monzon then drove to Oxnard, where he allegedly met a 15-year-old female acquaintance and molested her, authorities said. They said he then allegedly attempted to rob a pizza delivery person in Oxnard at gunpoint.

Monzon was arrested the next day--Nov. 19--and charged with the sex crime, but deputies did not realize he may have been involved in the other crimes, authorities said.

Monzon was arrested for the additional crimes Wednesday morning as he drove to court to be arraigned on the molestation charge, deputies said.

He remains in jail in lieu of $500,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
