Group Meets to Plan Schools’ Future

A group of Moorpark parents and school officials took the first tentative step last weekend to plan the school district’s next 10 years.

For three days, the group of 29 school administrators, parents, teachers and community leaders stayed at an Oxnard hotel and hashed out what should be at the core of any future plan.

Modeling the strategy session after similar work in Glendale and at more than 300 other school districts, the Moorpark group developed a preliminary list of 13 beliefs on what should be included in district goals and created a short mission statement.

School board Trustee Greg Barker said he received real insight into the community’s desires for the future.

The mission statement and list of beliefs, which includes such comments as “we believe everyone has a right to an education,” is simply meant to be the underpinning for a plan for action, school Supt. Thomas Duffy said.

Duffy said another group would be formed to develop specific goals and ways of achieving them. That plan will eventually go before the school board for approval, which Duffy expects might occur in April or May.
