United Way Begins Leadership Program

Share

Hoping to create a cadre of professionals well-versed on the challenges facing their communities, United Way of Ventura County on Thursday launched the first countywide leadership development program.

The Ventura County Leadership Academy began with an orientation to the county and followed with a reception at the home of Cal Lutheran University President Luther Luedtke.

The participants--22 professionals chosen from throughout the county--include corporate leaders, government workers and small-business owners.

Today, they will split into three teams and spend part of the day canvassing Moorpark, Ojai and Port Hueneme and interviewing key public officials.

“The idea is to spend five to six hours in a community learning as much as they can to make a group presentation on Saturday,” said David Harris, vice president of United Way of Ventura.

The remaining six monthly sessions will include field trips, workshops and interviews with decision makers in housing, education, public safety, agriculture, economic development and health care.

The Leadership Academy was founded some Ventura County professionals seeking ways to develop grass-roots solutions to community problems. It is funded through participants’ fees, corporate and individual donations and a $15,000 grant from United Way.
