Bad Decisions Made on Capriati, Davis Cup

Share

How interesting to hear the pious sages of the tennis world profess to care so much for Jennifer Capriati’s fragile psyche [Jan. 19]. “We’d love to have her back . . . “ “We’re really pulling for Jennifer . . . “ “Whatever’s best for her . . . “ Blah, blah, blah.

Maybe if they’d had so much concern when she was 14 (instead of sucking the life out of her like she was a golden goose), she’d have realized her enormous potential.

Do you think her dad goes out to happy hour with Jim Pierce, reminiscing over extra-dry martinis about the good old days, when they could lord over their daughters like psychopathic Svengalis? Stefano probably needs Jennifer back on the tour because it’s almost time for a tuneup on his Ferrari, and those don’t come cheap, you know.

I am saddened to discover that Davis Cup tickets for Feb. 9-11 at La Costa are available only in a three-day package.

We are an average working family and cannot afford to take three days off work/school and pay for an entire package. We would love to support our country and tennis, but the ticket policy seems to once again target the tennis elite. It is very difficult to explain to my 10-year-old daughter that we cannot afford to attend.

This seems to be a lose-lose situation for Davis Cup, the average fan and for La Costa.
