Chaney Decides to Sit Out Game With Suspended Temple Player
Temple Coach John Chaney sat out the Owls’ 54-52 victory over St. Joseph’s on Saturday, reportedly to be with suspended center Marc Jackson.
Jackson was given a one-game suspension by the Atlantic 10 Conference for unsportsmanlike conduct after knocking down Duke’s Greg Newton with an elbow to the head in Temple’s 59-58 victory Thursday.
Atlantic 10 spokesman Ray Cella said Chaney supported the suspension. “He is not protesting,” Cella said. “The reason he’s not here is he felt he should be with Marc today.”
Temple president Peter Liacouras said Chaney was worried about Jackson, the Owls’ leading scorer (16.1 points a game) and rebounder (9.1). “Marc has been extremely distraught and the coach decided he should stay with him,” Liacouras said.
Chaney couldn’t be reached for comment. He and Jackson apologized to Newton and Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski for the incident.
Assistant coach Jim Maloney took over for Chaney on Saturday. Forward Derrick Battie scored a career high 23 points for Temple (11-7, 7-0).
