Moopark Planners OK Housing Project Over Objections

An upscale housing project with two golf courses won unanimous support Monday night from the Moorpark Planning Commission, despite neighbors’ concerns about traffic on the city’s north side.

Called the Moorpark Country Club Estates, the project is planned for 655 acres between Grimes Canyon and Walnut Canyon roads. Backed by the Westlake-based Bollinger Development Co., the project would have 216 homes with prices in the $500,000 to $1 million range.

But some residents protested that it would dump more cars onto already crowded streets.

“This town has been saturated with building and with automobiles,” said Pete Peters, who lives on nearby Walnut Canyon Road.

Planning commissioners, however, were more concerned with other details of the project, particularly that developers not use drinking water to grade or irrigate the golf courses.

“Using potable water for grading purposes seems to be a terrible waste,” said Commissioner Ernesto Acosta.

The project now goes to the City Council for approval.
