The Ottawa Senators, far and away the NHL’s worst team, ended a league-record 17-game home winless streak Monday night with a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

Alexei Yashin had a goal and two assists for Ottawa, which also got goals from Daniel Alfredsson, Steve Duchesne and Ted Drury.

Dale Hawerchuk scored both St. Louis goals, leaving him only one shy of 500 in his 15-year NHL career.

“You’re not going to win scoring two goals,” Brett Hull said of the Blues. “I mean, you could play your sister’s team and if you get two goals, they’ll probably beat you.”

The Senators, whose 9-37-2 mark is the worst in the league, are on their third coach, second general manager and second rink since last winning on home ice Oct. 26 at the Ottawa Civic Centre.

Ottawa won for the first time in the new Palladium and was given a standing ovation throughout the final minute of play by the crowd of 13,125.

Florida 2, Pittsburgh 1--Mark Fitzpatrick stopped 23 shots and Rob Niedermayer had a goal and an assist as the Panthers edged the Penguins at Miami.

Gord Murphy scored a power-play goal for the Panthers. Jaromir Jagr spoiled Fitzpatrick’s shutout bid by scoring his 41st goal of the season.

Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux was held without a point for only the second time in 42 games this season as the Penguins had a four-game winning streak broken.

Winnipeg 2, Dallas 1--Joe Nieuwendyk’s apparent tying goal with two seconds left was disallowed by referee Paul Stewart, and the Jets hung on to defeat the Stars at Dallas.

The Stars, who had won three in a row, thought they had sent it into overtime when the red light went on in the closing seconds. But Stewart immediately ruled that Nieuwendyk had kicked the puck into the net.

The Jets got goals from Keith Tkachuk, his 30th of the season, and Kris King. Nieuwendyk scored for Dallas.
