Simon Simply Says It All in Closing Seconds for Channel Islands

Bernabe Simon’s three-point basket from the left corner with nine seconds left to play nullified Steve Aylsworth’s 32-point effort and gave visiting Channel Islands High a 69-68 Marmonte League victory Wednesday night over Westlake.

Simon then sealed the victory for the Raiders (14-6, 6-5 in league play) by stealing the ball following the Warriors’ inbounds pass.

Aylsworth had given Westlake (12-8, 6-5) a 68-66 lead with 24 seconds remaining by sinking two free throws.

Charles Merricks and Junior Mosones each scored 16 points for Channel Islands.

Newbury Park 66, Camarillo 63--Mike Bowers and Charles Stanton each had 14 points, and Allyn Gilstrap had 13 for Newbury Park (8-14, 3-8), which posted its second consecutive Marmonte League upset. Nathan Kaup scored 17 points for Camarillo (12-8, 4-7).

Thousand Oaks vs. Royal, postponed--Wednesday’s storm caused a power outage in the Marmonte League game at Royal. Highlander Coach Larry Wiksell hopes the game will be rescheduled for Monday night.

Harvard-Westlake 65, Crespi 38--Jarron Collins scored 12 points and had 17 rebounds and seven assists for the Wolverines (19-2, 9-0) in a Mission League game at Harvard. Jason Collins scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds for the Wolverines, who outscored the Celts (5-15, 0-9) through three quarters, 48-20.

Ventura 69, Rio Mesa 59--Ryan Preis had 15 points and Donte Lincoln and Charles Dixon each added 14 for Ventura (13-7, 8-3) in a Channel League game. The Cougars, who trailed by two points at halftime, outscored Rio Mesa, 22-13, in the fourth quarter.

Buena 69, San Marcos 50--Mike Golden scored nine of his 11 points in the third quarter for the Bulldogs (14-7, 9-2) in a Channel League game. John Tobias added 12 points for Buena.

Sonny Oden scored 12 points for San Marcos (5-16, 2-9).

Bell-Jeff 81, Mary Star 58--Rueben Douglas scored 31 points and Kent Dennis added 25 for the Guards (16-5, 8-1) in a Santa Fe League game.

La Canada 60, Monrovia 48--Danny Bush scored 15 points and had seven steals for the Spartans (19-4, 7-0) in a Rio Hondo League game at Monrovia.

Oak Park 57, Bishop Diego 50--Randy Gastwirt had 21 points and Dan Wasserman and Vaughn Corley each added 10 as Oak Park (15-6, 6-0) clinched its third consecutive Tri-Valley League championship.

Alemany 59, Chaminade 54--The Indians (12-11) won their second Mission League game in a row and pulled even with Chaminade in league play at 5-4 with Adrian Pantoja and Jesus Castillon leading the way. Pantoja had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Castillon had 17 points. Scott Long led Chaminade (11-12) with 15 points.

Granada Hills 52, Birmingham 51--Paul Chan took an inbounds pass with six seconds left, drove the lane and scored as time expired to give the Highlanders a Northwest Valley Conference victory.

Ernest Quinley had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Leon Pimky added 12 points for Granada Hills (9-10, 5-2).

Ellis Richardson scored 22 points for the Braves (9-10, 3-4).

Taft 50, Kennedy 48--Clayton Powdrill missed a game-tying shot with six seconds left for the Golden Cougars (10-9,2-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Amir Barnetzer scored 14 points and Victor Purnell had 13 for the Toreadors (6-11, 2-5).

El Camino Real 77, San Fernando 61--Cameron Henderson had 30 points and 11 rebounds for the Conquistadores (14-8, 4-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Center Eric Dotson added 19 points and 18 rebounds for El Camino Real.

Canoga Park 96, Sylmar 63--Carloes Harper had 25 points, 14 rebounds and five steals, and Anthony Ellison added 24 points, 12 rebounds and six steals for the Hunters (17-3, 6-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home.

Van Nuys 72, Poly 60--Onaje Longmire scored 22 points and Kris Hurdle added 13 as the Wolves (11-8, 6-1) remained tied for first place in the Mid-Valley League with Canoga Park. Former Van Nuys player William Wilson scored 18 for Poly (4-17, 0-7).

Grant 41, Reseda 38--Donald Patterson scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, and the Lancers (10-10, 4-3) took the lead for the first time with three minutes remaining in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at home.

Patterson hit seven of 15 shots from the floor, and George Gilpin blocked four shots for Grant.

Monroe 94, North Hollywood 81--Marrean Robottom and Corey Saxon each scored 17 points for Monroe (11-5, 3-4) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Shannon Johnson had 30 points and 12 rebounds, and Melvin Goodman added 20 points for North Hollywood (7-14, 4-3).
