Saul Goodman; New York Philharmonic Timpanist

Saul Goodman, 89, timpanist with the New York Philharmonic for 47 years. Goodman joined the orchestra when he was 21 and played for a succession of internationally known conductors including his favorite, Arturo Toscanini. Goodman played the first performance of a timpano to be broadcast, and performed with studio orchestras for radio, television, motion pictures and recordings. A member of the Juilliard faculty who also taught at Sarah Lawrence College, Goodman composed works for drums, invented sticks and a tuning device for timpani, and wrote a textbook, “Modern Method for Timpani.” He continued teaching, lecturing and performing after his retirement. On Jan. 26 in Palm Beach, Fla.
