The Santa Paula City Council has endorsed a proposal to build low-income housing in the city.

In a 3-2 vote, the council agreed Monday to send a letter to the County Board of Supervisors supporting Cabrillo Economic Development Corp.’s application for a $200,000 grant, which would be used to help build 34 rental townhomes.

Mayor John Melton and council members Laura Espinosa and Alfonso Urias supported the project, while council members Robin Sullivan and Don Johnson opposed the proposal.

Cabrillo Development, the largest private developer of low-income housing in the county, is one of 68 groups nationwide to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars from a newly created pool of loans and grants to plan, build and manage housing for the poor.

According to Espinosa, supervisors will review the application for the project in the next few months.

The project calls for the construction of two- to four-bedroom townhomes that will rent for $530 to $614 a month.

Urias said the city “is in desperate need of low-income housing, and this project will alleviate a lot of the housing problems we have.”

Sullivan and Johnson could not be reached for comment.
