Even after more than six years of not winning at Pittsburgh, the Boston Bruins invent fresh ways to lose.

Jaromir Jagr scored his 42nd goal and 100th point in a wild four-goal third period that carried the Penguins to a 6-5 victory Tuesday night as a close game erupted into a shootout.

“It seemed like it was going to be a semi-normal game for two periods,” Bruin defenseman Ray Bourque said. “I don’t know what happens. They pick it up a little bit, get storming a little bit and that gets you off the things you want to do.”

The Penguins broke a three-game losing streak, which tied their season high. The Bruins are 0-10-1 in Pittsburgh since Jan. 2, 1990.

Boston had a 3-2 lead when Mario Lemieux scored his 46th goal, on a power play at 10:37. Petr Nedved then put the Penguins ahead, 4-3, with a spectacular rink-long rush on a shorthanded breakaway. The lead lasted only 16 seconds before Sandy Moger scored for Boston.

Bourque gave Boston a 5-4 lead 44 seconds later when his shot deflected off a Pittsburgh stick and past Ken Wregget. Brian Smolinski made it 5-5 only 1:15 later when he one-timed Sergei Zubov’s pass past a screened Bill Ranford from 25 feet.

Jagr, however, put the Penguins ahead to stay 15:02 when he stripped the puck from Bob Sweeney at the blue line and avoided defenseman Jon Rohloff’s desperate dive in front of the net to score and post his first 100-point season in the NHL.

N.Y. Rangers 4, N.Y. Islanders 2--Glenn Healy made 23 saves and Pat Verbeek scored a key goal as the Rangers beat the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.

Verbeek’s goal early in the second period gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead and their eventual winning goal. Adam Graves, Luc Robitaille and Ray Ferraro also scored for the Rangers, who are 3-0 against their crosstown rivals.

Detroit 4, Florida 2--The Red Wings won the battle of NHL division leaders as Steve Yzerman and Vyacheslav Kozlov each scored twice in a victory over the Panthers at Detroit.

Calgary 3, Ottawa 1--Sandy McCarthy and Cory Stillman scored power-play goals in the second period on deflections by James Patrick in the Flames’ victory at Calgary, Alberta.

NHL Notes

San Jose Shark center Craig Janney, forced out of Monday night’s game against Toronto by an injured shoulder, underwent an MRI. Results will be known today. . . . The Dallas Stars recalled defenseman Travis Richards from their minor league affiliate to fill the roster spot left by forward Shane Churla, put on the injured reserve list because of a strained knee.
