Northridge Rallies in 8th Inning to Edge San Diego, 5-4

A four-run eighth-inning rally carried the Cal State Northridge baseball team to a 5-4 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference game Wednesday at San Diego.

Juan Velazquez recorded two outs in the seventh inning to pick up his first victory. Robert Crabtree pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts for his first save.

Adam Kennedy scored a run and tripled in a run for the Matadors (6-1).

The Master’s 5, Southern California College 2--Jeff Bennett and Eric Kowes drove in all five runs in the Mustangs’ first victory of the season in a nonconference game at Master’s (1-3). Bennett and Kowes each had two hits, and Bennett had three runs batted in. Lance Wallace (1-1) worked eight innings for the victory.

Mission 8, Long Beach City 4--The Free Spirit (1-1) scored four runs in the top of the eighth to erase a 4-3 deficit in a nonconference game at Long Beach City College.

Tony Pulido was two for five with two RBIs. Jaime Serna added a double and two RBI, and Danny Arquello pitched a seven-hitter.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 82, West L.A. 59--Bill Bedgood had 21 points and Mike Posey had 14 for Canyons (9-19, 3-4), who trailed by two at halftime, in a Western State Conference South Division game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ventura 79, Oxnard 41--Brianna Kanongata’a scored 18 points for the visiting Pirates (27-0, 7-0) in the WSC North Division game. Marina Torres added 10 points and nine steals for Ventura.

Valley 89, Glendale 58--Valery Brady scored 27 points for Valley (22-9, 7-0) in a WSC South Division game. Shawanda Hotchkiss added 16 points, and Lisa Nielsen had 12 points and 17 rebounds.

Canyons 95, Pierce 45--Melissa Dunkerley scored 29 points for the Cougars (17-11, 5-2) in a WSC South Division game. Michelle Johnson had 27 points and 10 rebounds for Pierce (5-20, 0-7).
