Share

Folk music will be served up with the cappuccinos at the Encino Marketplace Starbucks this morning, when 1960s legend Joan Baez performs for the early-morning coffee crowd.

Baez, scheduled to begin her set at 8:30 a.m., will sing songs from her latest album, “Ring Them Bells.” At 7:30 a.m., fellow folk singer Dar Williams will kick off the informal show, which is open to the public.

Williams will be the opening act for Baez at a performance at the Wiltern Theater tonight.

Williams will perform selections from her new album, “Mortal City.”

The show will be broadcast live by KSCA (101.9-FM), an adult-rock station based in Glendale, on its morning music show hosted by Nicole Sandler and Chuck Moshontz. Starbucks and the radio station are sponsoring the show.

Today’s performance is one of a series that started in October and has brought acts such as rock ‘n’ rollers Jude Cole, John Hiatt and the Fabulous Thunderbirds to Starbucks.

“We’re very excited to be able to get critically acclaimed artists to be part of the live broadcasts we’re doing at Starbucks,” said Robert Lyles, promotions director for the radio station.

Asked why a performer such as Baez would do a coffeehouse gig, Lyles said, “We play her music. We support her. Now she’s showing support for our series.”

The Encino Marketplace is located at the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Hayvenhurst Avenue.
