HAZARD WARNING: The state has released maps showing likely areas of liquefaction or landslides after a large earthquake (B1). . . . Three of the 16 maps pinpointed portions of Ventura County--in Simi Valley, the Santa Susana Mountains and Westlake Village-Thousand Oaks. . . . Simi Valley is most prone to liquefaction, according to the maps, with landslides more likely elsewhere. All the maps are still tentative.

LONG MEMORY: The latest episode of NBC’s “Law and Order” has a prosecutor telling an opposing defense lawyer, who wants to move a case to Staten Island in search of an all-white jury: “Why don’t we just move to Simi Valley?” . . . Simi Valley Mayor Greg Stratton hadn’t seen the show, but his response echoed what city officials have been saying since 1992, when a jury acquitted Los Angeles police officers in the beating of motorist Rodney G. King. “There’s some smart writer someplace that probably didn’t know the whole story,” Stratton said, adding that the jury in the case was from throughout Ventura County, not just Simi Valley.

BASIC BULLOCK: Sandra Bullock of “While You Were Sleeping” fame may be Hollywood’s hottest property, but her down-to-earth attitude captured the hearts of the locals at the foot of Seaward Avenue, where she is shooting a low-budget film (B2). . . . Bullock drives a gold 1962 Ford Falcon and may take surfing lessons from a local wave rider. “A lot of Hollywood people you meet [are] phony,” eatery owner John Strobel said. “She’s really down-home. She’s like the girl next door.”

HITTING HOME: Camarillo State Hospital workers want local residents to know that their jobs are important to the community at large (B1). So they’re passing out cards with their cash and putting stickers on their checks that say, “This money earned at Camarillo State.” . . . “These people need only be educated,” said Brian Bowley, president of the union chapter that represents hospital technicians.
