Three Alhambra police officers shot to death a sword-wielding man after he apparently lunged at them with the ceremonial blade, authorities said.

Nghia Quoc Ha, 18, of Monterey Park, died of his wounds at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Rodriguez

About 11 p.m. Wednesday, residents of a home in the 1500 block of West Ramona Road called Alhambra police after Ha, a guest at the house, allegedly attacked a female resident with his sword, Rodriguez said. When police officers tried to speak to Ha, he wielded his sword at them, Rodriguez said.

“The officers then fired their duty weapons at the suspect, striking him several times,” Rodriguez said.

None of the officers were injured by the sword described by authorities as “a samurai-style sword.”

Vong Chong, 44, was treated and released at Garfield Medical Center for lacerations to her head and arms caused by the sword.

Alhambra Police Lt Rudy Panza said sheriff’s detectives are conducting an independent investigation into the shooting as they do with all such fatalities involving the Alhambra department.
