Ice Dogs Lose in Sudden Death

The Ice Dogs couldn’t hold a three-goal lead and lost to the Atlanta Knights in a sudden-death shootout, 6-5, in front of an announced 1,424 at the Sports Arena on Friday.

Mark Greig scored the sudden-death goal for the Knights after the teams tied, 2-2, in the overtime shootout.

A big difference in the game was Atlanta’s two 5-on-3 advantages, both of which the Knights converted into goals.

“I thought both those were two cheap . . . calls,” Ice Dog Coach John Van Boxmeer said. “They got that quick one to begin the third period and all the momentum changed. I thought we owned them in the second period.”

John Byce scored two goals, and new acquisition Ladislav Karabin had a goal and an assist for the Ice Dogs.

Despite the loss, the Ice Dogs (24-20-7) improved to a two-point advantage for third place over the San Francisco Spiders in the International Hockey League’s Southwest Division. Teams get one point for shootout losses and the Spiders lost to Indianapolis, 5-2, Friday.
