Four-Star Films : ‘Potemkin’
An incident from the abortive 1905 Russian revolution--a naval revolt that prompted the massacre of a group of rebel supporters and innocent bystanders--provided 27-year-old Sergei Eisenstein with the material for an historical re-creation: a great, multifaceted battle epic. It is a riveting, electric and stirring film with a legendary centerpiece--the Odessa Steps massacre--that seems to explode off the screen (Showtime Saturday at 5:30 a.m.).
