Share

A suspect has been arrested in last week’s fatal shooting of a student near Dorsey High School. Anthony Jerome Smith, 26, was expected to be arraigned today after his arrest Friday in the Mid-City area.

Smith is expected to face one count of murder and four counts of attempted murder for the Feb. 5 shootings that killed Eduardo “Eddie” Gamez, 14, and wounded two friends. The wounded boys have been released from hospitals.

Police described Smith as a gang member who has no previous felony convictions but several brushes with law enforcement.

Witnesses said the gunman emerged from a car and shot Gamez and his friends as they stood near the school in Southwest Los Angeles. Police Monday said the car used in the shooting helped lead police to Smith, who was known to use a similar vehicle. Police are still looking for the other occupants of the car that Smith allegedly rode in.
