Aspiring cosmetologists in Simi Valley will soon have a new place in which to learn their trade after school officials decided to buy a boarded-up building on Los Angeles Avenue.

The Simi Valley Unified School District agreed Tuesday to pay the owners of the former Reed’s Furniture building $610,000 for the 1.12-acre parcel at 3340 Los Angeles Ave. The 15,000-square-foot building will also have room for other adult education programs.

The district, which would pay for the building with money from its adult school building fund, would move the School of Cosmetology out of a rented storefront in a mall.

“They’ll have a place of their own and we’ll no longer be paying rent of $89,000 a year,” Supt. Mary Beth Wolford said. “And the neighborhood will appreciate the upgrading of the building.”

The building, which was damaged in the Jan. 17, 1994 earthquake, has been boarded up since. Its block walls are strong, but it needs new roofing, flooring and bathrooms, Wolford said. In addition, there are graffiti markings inside and other cleanup needed after vagrants broke into the building.
