Aliso Hills Drive Parking Ban Revised

A parking ban on Aliso Hills Drive, intended to prevent commercial vehicles from rolling downhill, was softened by the City Council on Tuesday.

After hearing complaints that the restrictions would prevent cars from parking at Mendocino Park and crowd surrounding streets, the council decided to scale back the no-parking zone.

The ban will now cover only about half of the street, from Mendocino Court to Alicia Parkway.

City staff indicated that parking, particularly large vehicles, along the steep curves of the street poses a potential hazard.

But residents say that a complete parking restriction would force users of Mendocino Park, particularly on days when youth soccer is played there, into their neighborhoods.

“I don’t want the traffic on my street,” Mendocino Court resident Bill Martin said.

Council members agreed, discussing several options before settling on the partial no-parking restriction.

“The parking of commercial vehicles on the lower portion of Aliso Hills Drive has been a concern of mine for several weeks,” Mayor Randal J. Bressette said.

“However, I don’t think the entire street needs to be red-curbed,” he added.
