Center for Disabled Warns of Cutbacks

The Tri-County Regional Center, a nonprofit group that helps place developmentally disabled patients in community homes, is planning a series of meetings to update families about potential budget cuts.
The Carpinteria-based placement center serves Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. The center faces uncertain funding because federal lawmakers have yet to resolve the budget impasse and potential cuts in Medicaid have been proposed, said Bernie Schaeffer, the Tri-County center director.
The centers have become more of a resource for the families of developmentally disabled patients over the past few years as state mental health officials downsize their hospitals.
Gov. Pete Wilson has called for the closing of Camarillo State Hospital and developmental center.
Three informational meetings will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, one in each county served by the Tri-County Regional Center.
The Ventura County meeting will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Oxnard Community Center, 800 Hobson Way. For more information, call 684-1204.
