Police said they arrested a 40-year-old man after he allegedly stabbed a woman during an argument in an alley Saturday.

Robert Vandoren of Tustin told investigators that he attacked the woman, 23-year-old Janel Vaughan, Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Bob Rahaeuser said Sunday. The man was taken into custody at the Orange County Jail, where he remained Sunday on $250,000 bail, officials said.

Vaughan, who was stabbed three times in the stomach and chest, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where she was listed in critical condition Sunday.

According to the manager of a restaurant where Vaughan works as a waitress, Vandoren had been in the restaurant the day before the stabbing.

“He’s not someone who just happened to walk up,” said the manager, who asked that her name not be mentioned.

Police said Vandoren confronted Vaughan in an alley near the restaurant.

“This contact escalated into an argument, at which time Vandoren pulled a knife and stabbed Vaughan,” Rahaeuser said.

The knife reportedly used in the stabbing was found at the crime scene, police said.
