Suicidal Man Pulled From Path of Train

Two Los Angeles police officers prevented a man from committing suicide Monday afternoon by pulling him off railroad tracks in Sylmar moments before the arrival of a Metrolink commuter train, authorities said.

The police had received a call about a man sitting on the tracks in the 12300 block of San Fernando Road, said Police Sgt. Frank Reynoso.

When the officers arrived, the 32-year-old man was running down the tracks into the path of the oncoming train, shouting that he wanted to kill himself, Reynoso said.

Officers George Molina and Andrew Mathes wrestled the man off the rails “just as the train goes by,” Reynoso said.

Two other officers, Angela Stewart and Rene Zavala, had waved at the train to urge the engineer to stop, he said.

The man, a Pacoima resident who was not identified, was taken to Olive View-UCLA Medical Center for evaluation, Reynoso said.
