Assessment District Supporters Plan Rally

Share

A campaign to rally support for a citywide assessment district to pay for beach and park improvements begins tonight with a 7:30 kickoff meeting at Murdy Park, 7000 Norma Drive.

The Save Our Kids Park and Beach Campaign Committee hopes to draw volunteers to help the group inform the public about Measure GG, an advisory vote on the March 26 ballot.

The measure would gauge public opinion on the assessment district proposal. The City Council will ultimately decide if the assessment district should be created.

Volunteers are needed to canvass neighborhoods, distribute literature and make phone calls to encourage people to support the proposal, said Chuck Beauregard, chairman of the committee. He said the campaign already has more than 400 volunteers.

If an assessment district is created, it will raise about $2.7 million a year in taxes to pay for beach and park improvements, including sites for youth sports, a senior citizens center and an aquatics complex.
