Architecture-for-Art Advances: After three years of controversy, the Culver City Arts Committee on Wednesday approved an office building project in which the architecture will satisfy a requirement that art be included in such construction. The four-story structure at 3535 Hayden St., the first in the city to receive such approval, was designed by noted architect Eric Owen Moss. Many cities require a percentage of construction costs be devoted to art, but Culver City was the first in the United States to declare that architecture itself could be recognized as art, a position that has set off debate. The Arts Committee recommendation now goes to the City Council, which has previously supported recognizing creative architecture as art.
