Irvine Valley Defeats Mt. San Antonio

Irvine Valley, in its first season of women’s basketball, won its first playoff game, 70-57, over visiting Mt. San Antonio on Friday.

Juliana Castro had 16 points and Jennifer Nakanishi had 15--despite making only two of 10 three-point shots--for Irvine Valley (25-7). The ninth-seeded Lasers advance to play at No. 8 Victor Valley (23-6) Tuesday.

Dyanna Hatch had 12 points, Pam Loud 11 and Heather Robinson 10 for Irvine Valley, which led at the half, 35-24.

Loud and Robinson each had eight rebounds.

Mt. San Antonio ends the season 11-13.

In another playoff game:

Golden West 64, San Bernardino Valley 57--Blythe Linsey had 20 points and 18 rebounds for host Golden West, which won despite going 11 minutes without a field goal in the first half, during which it trailed by as many as 14.

Linsey had 13 points, 12 rebounds and six of her eight blocks in the second half. Leila Ryan had 12 points and 10 assists and Nicole Wiora also had 12 points.

Golden West, seeded 16th, advances to play at No. 1 Ventura (30-0) Tuesday. San Bernardino Valley ends the season 15-13.

In nonconference baseball:

Cerritos 7, Fullerton 1--John Ruiz pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter to help Cerritos hand Fullerton its second loss of the season. Marc Anspach was two for three with one run scored for the Hornets (9-2).

In nonconference softball:

Rancho Santiago 5, Mt. San Antonio 1--With two outs in the third, Melissa Cruz doubled in Monica Chavarria for the go-ahead run for Rancho Santiago. Carol Lizalde hit a two-run single in the sixth to seal the victory.

Pitcher Kristi Bolle gave up two hits, striking out three. Mt. San Antonio’s only run came on a passed ball.

In the South of the Border men’s swimming relays:

Golden West wins--Scott Wester won the men’s 100-yard butterfly (1 minute 5.75 seconds) and 100 freestyle (48.12) to help Golden West take first place by more than 140 points. The Rustlers also won three of the four relay events and got a first-place finish by Gabe Carper in the 100 backstroke (55.73) and finished with 414 points. Chaffey was second with 272. Saddleback finished fourth at 205.

In the South of the Border women’s swimming relays:

Saddleback wins--Saddleback edged second-place Grossmont, 323.5-312. Maiko Shigeeda won the 100 butterfly (1:05.75) and Lisa Henningsen won the 100 freestyle (57.15).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 5, Golden West 2--Freshman Hanley Ernst (Dana Hills) won a critical match at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to give Saddleback the edge heading into doubles play.

Kevin Springer won at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Irvine Valley 0--Kevin Reid had 11 kills for Orange Coast (5-1, 3-1), which won, 15-3, 15-8, 15-8.

Golden West 3, Palomar 0--Host Golden West (5-0, 4-0) won, 15-3, 15-8, 15-8, to stay a game in front of second-place Orange Coast. Golden West beat Palomar in the state title match last season.
