Two days after a teacher was wounded by stray gunfire as he sat in his school’s library, a woman was killed in a midafternoon drive-by shooting Saturday by gang members aiming at a man standing next to her, police said.

The unidentified woman in her 40s was stepping up on a curb from a crosswalk in the 5400 block of West Adams Boulevard about 1 p.m. when a car drove by and gunfire erupted from it, said Sgt. Nick Fotiades of the Southwest division.

The three men inside the car were trying to kill a man standing next to the woman, he said.

After hearing the first round of shots, the intended victim dropped to the sidewalk, Fotiades said. Still standing and probably stunned by the gunfire, the woman was then struck in the arm and the neck by the next round of shots.

As the woman lay bleeding, the intended victim ran away and the gunmen sped off, authorities said. She was taken to UCLA Medical Center, where she died.

Alfredo Perez, the teacher shot Thursday at Figueroa Street Elementary School, remained in a coma Saturday.
