NO REPEAT: Van Nuys High School, last year’s national champs in the Science Bowl competition, was tripped up Saturday in its attempt to be the first repeat winners. Venice High School won the Los Angeles-area championship and the right to travel to Washington in May for the national title. Van Nuys came in second among 32 schools vying for the regional title (B1).

COMING HOME: Happy Days are being here again for actor Marion Ross, who is moving back to her quake-damaged Woodland Hills home. Hot Property (K1) reports that Ross, who bought the house with money earned playing the mother on the long-running sitcom “Happy Days,” has been on the road since the quake. . . . “I didn’t have to go back to the house until it was finished, and that was a blessing,” Ross told staffer Ruth Ryon.

HISTORIC FLIGHT: The legendary Angels Flight funicular railway reopened Saturday after a quarter-century hiatus. Much of the restoration work on the cable cars and station house was done by a San Fernando company that used slices of the original concrete archway to guarantee authenticity (B1).
