Katrina Nimmers, a 15-year-old South-Central Los Angeles native, gave something back to her community over the weekend by teaching about 300 youngsters what she knows best: tennis.

Nationally ranked by the United States Tennis Assn. since she was 12, Katrina is seeking to turn professional.

With the help of her father, Mike Nimmers, who also doubles as coach, Katrina started Tennis on Wheels, a roving tennis clinic for youths.

On Saturday, as part of a celebration for Black History Month, Tennis on Wheels stopped at Green Meadows Recreation Park at 89th Street and Avalon Avenue, where Katrina often practices.

Her clinics include instruction in how to play, as well as education on health and mathematics.

“I’m interested in helping my community,” Katrina said.

The Nimmers are taking Tennis on Wheels across the United States in the next several months, as well as to South Africa and Ghana.
