The Little Tokyo Service Center received $1,000 Thursday from an unusual donor.

Bank J. Kim, who was convicted earlier this year of running a slum in Hollywood, donated the money as a condition of his legal settlement, said City Atty. James Hahn. Kim was the owner of a building in the 5500 block of Hollywood that was infested with rats and cockroaches and had exposed wiring and leaky sewer lines, Hahn said.

“We give a list [of charitable organizations] to the defendant when they indicate a willingness to settle the lawsuit,” Hahn said, “and we allow them to choose from the list.”

The Little Tokyo Service Center builds low-income housing mostly in the Little Tokyo area and will use the money to fund projects.
