West Hills resident Sheila D. Wright was appointed this week to the Los Angeles County Commission on Disabilities by 3rd District Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

Yaroslavsky said Wright’s experience includes service as past president of the board of the North Los Angeles County Regional Center, project director for nonprofit community health provider Northeast Valley Health Corp., member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Advisory Board and Shared Decision Making Council, as well as a parent advocate for the Rancho Del Valle Parent Support Group.

As a parent of a developmentally disabled 17-year-old daughter, Wright said she wants to help provide opportunities for other parents and their disabled children by being at the forefront of issues affecting the disabled.

“It’s a great chance to be in touch with other representatives located in other geographical areas,” she said.

Yaroslavsky said the duties of the county’s 17-member commission include advising the Board of Supervisors on the needs of people with disabilities, recommending improvements in policies, systems and procedures to advance the interests of people with disabilities, cooperating with other entities serving those with disabilities and evaluating and suggesting disability-related legislation.
