Man Sent to Jail for Kicking Wife

A man was sentenced to jail Friday for kicking his wife after a fortune teller told him she would cheat on him, officials said.

Jose Raul Rodriguez, 32, pleaded no contest to spousal battery for that attack and also to battery for a 1994 attack on the same 35-year-old victim, Deputy City Atty. Kenneth Tso said.

In addition to sentencing Rodriguez to 62 days in jail, Van Nuys Municipal Judge Alan Ellis placed him on three years’ probation and ordered him to undergo a year of domestic-violence counseling and pay $200 to the state Domestic Violence Fund.

Rodriguez had failed to appear for his arraignment for the 1994 attack, during which he broke down his apartment door because he believed his wife had been drinking, then beat her, and was the subject of an arrest warrant, Tso said.

He was arrested by Los Angeles police after returning home from consulting the fortune teller early Thursday and attacking his wife again.
