Merger Imminent for Two City Departments

The city’s Library Department would be merged with its Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department under a reorganization plan slated for a final vote at City Council’s meeting Tuesday.

The new Community Services Department would provide homework centers for schoolchildren at libraries and parks, and library outreach activities at parks and neighborhood centers.

“We think this is a good fit,” said City Manager Jim Ruth, adding that the goal is to enhance services for the entire community.

An expanded volunteer program and consolidated administrative functions would be included, Ruth said. The move would also save money, he said, by eliminating one staff position.

The plan won unanimous support when it was introduced at the council’s meeting this week.
