Hearing Delayed on Waste Water Project
At the request of city officials, a state hearing on the Irvine Ranch Water District’s proposal to flush millions of gallons of treated waste water into Upper Newport Bay has been postponed to April 19.
The water district’s project, which has met considerable resistance from Newport Beach officials and homeowner groups in the past year, was to be considered Friday by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.
The plan entails discharging 5 million gallons of reclaimed water a day during nonsummer months into ponds that empty into a tributary of Newport Bay.
District officials estimate that Irvine water users would save about $20 million in disposal costs over a 10-year period.
