Basheer Leads the Way as Irvine Downs Pacific

Allah-mi Basheer scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as UC Irvine defeated Pacific, 67-57, Saturday in the women’s regular-season finale in Big West Conference basketball.

The Anteaters (12-15, 7-11) led by two at the half, outscoring Pacific, 31-23, in the second. Leticia Oseguera added 15 points for UC Irvine and Fatima Warren scored 14.

Leslie Cox led Pacific (16-11, 11-7) with 22 points. Pacific’s leading scorer, Kate McAllister, played only four minutes after injuring her ankle.

The Anteaters will face sixth-seeded New Mexico State on Thursday in the Big West tournament.

In another Big West Conference women’s basketball game:

Nevada 74, Cal State Fullerton 70--Shayla Bradshaw scored 21 points in her final game with Cal State Fullerton, but the Titans were unable to send her off as a winner. Bradshaw finished No. 2 on the Titans’ all-time scoring list.

Bradshaw missed a desperation jumper with four seconds left, but teammate Kim Cram got the rebound and was fouled. Cram missed both free throws, which would have tied the score. Fullerton finishes the season 7-20, 4-14.

In nonconference baseball:

Long Beach State 10, Ohio State 8--Ohio State scored six runs in the eighth to tie the score, but the 49ers answered with two runs in their half of the inning at Blair Field. Jason Hodges and Jason Knupfer drove in three runs each for Long Beach (11-6). In the second game, Al Watson had two hits and four RBIs for the 49ers, who won, 6-2.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Concordia 12-11, Cal Baptist 11-7--Derrick Bly was six for eight with two home runs and four RBIs on the day for Concordia (7-6-1, 2-2), which has won four consecutive games.

Southern California College 3, Westmont 1--Mike Caston’s two-run home run in the seventh inning made a winner of Kevin Withers and SCC. Withers gave up seven hits over 7 2/3 innings, striking out three, and Kelly Lowery finished up for the save.

SCC lost the second game to Westmont, 7-4.

In the Leadoff Classic softball tournament:

Long Beach State 6, Princeton 2--The 49ers opened bracket play by rallying for six runs in the seventh inning, tying the score on Nicola Walsh’s two-run single and taking the lead on Amanda Adams’ single to score Walsh.

Earlier in their final pool-play game, the 49ers (6-8) edged Florida State, 2-1.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 11, Pacific Christian 2--Chrissy Vega went four for four with two runs scored and two stolen bases for Southern California (5-3-2). In the first game, Angie Vega went three for three with two runs scored as Southern California won, 9-0. Wolf added three runs and three RBIs.
