City Will Repair Basketball Courts
The City Council has agreed to spend about $16,500 to renovate outdoor basketball courts at Tustin High School.
City officials said the neighborhood, near San Juan and Orange streets, has few recreational facilities. They have proposed a joint project under which the school would allow the public to use the courts after school hours and on weekends. The school board is expected to approve that idea later this month.
Calling the courts a “blight on the neighborhood,” the council voted 3 to 1 Monday to repair them, over the objections of Councilman Michael J. Doyle. Councilman Jeffery M. Thomas, who in previous meetings had expressed opposition to the plan, was absent.
The city “cannot be all things to all people,” Doyle said. “Citizens won’t be able to use this until school is out, and I’m definitely opposed to that.”
The council majority, however, said the project will bring a much-needed resource to the region.
According to a city report, the 12 basketball courts must be resurfaced, sealed and restriped. The backboards, rims and nets must be replaced.
