Northridge : CSUN Begins Taking ‘Instant’ Admissions

An “instant” admissions program at Cal State Northridge every Friday can reduce the weeks- to months-long application process to 20 minutes.

Dubbed “Fridays at CSUN,” the program was started two weeks ago to boost student enrollment, said Leroy Geter, assistant director of student outreach recruitment.

The program targets community college transfers, especially students who are working or are parents, he said.

Prospective transfers should bring a completed fall 1996 undergraduate application, an official transcript showing completion of at least 56 transferable units with a 2.0 grade-point average by the first day of the fall semester, and a $55 application fee or fee waiver, Geter said.

During the Friday sessions, counselors answer questions and review materials. If everything checks out, students are admitted on the spot, Geter said. “It usually takes about 20 minutes,” he said.

Eight students were admitted during the first session two weeks ago. As the popularity of the program grows, enrollment through the instant admission process should also go up, Geter said.

By providing convenience, the school is trying to become more student-centered in the hopes of stealing prospects from other universities, Geter said.

“We see the students as valuable consumers and customers,” he said.

The sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the University Park Apartments, Room 209, at Zelzah Avenue and Lassen Street, until enrollment for fall 1996 is closed, Geter said.
