Weekend TV : ‘People’s Choice Awards’ to Include Douglas Tribute

The deluge of award shows continues this weekend when CBS offers “The 22nd Annual People’s Choice Awards” Sunday at 9 p.m. on Channel 2. Winners are chosen by a public opinion poll conducted by the Gallup Organization.

Brett Butler of ABC’s “Grace Under Fire” hosts the festivities from Universal Studios. Oscar-winning actor-producer Michael Douglas will be honored with a special tribute presented by his “Streets of San Francisco” co-star, Karl Malden.

Sunday also marks the return of Bonnie Hunt’s CBS comedy series “Bonnie” at 8:30 p.m. on Channel 2. The comedy, about a small-town TV reporter now working at a Chicago station, premiered last fall as “The Bonnie Hunt Show.”

ABC’s Sunday movie offering is “Frequent Flyer” at 9 p.m. on Channels 7, 3 and 42. Jack Wagner (“Melrose Place”) stars as an airline pilot who flies around the country to visit his three wives (Shelley Hack, Nicole Eggert and Joan Severance).

Family entertainment this weekend includes Showtime’s “Heck’s Way Home” Sunday at 8 p.m., a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. Alan Arkin is featured as a dogcatcher.

Sen. Bob Dole’s victorious week in the GOP’s primary elections will be a popular topic on the public service programs.
