Joan Wilson Saffo; Community Leader With Los Angeles Beautiful

Joan Wilson Saffo, 82, community leader active with Los Angeles Beautiful. Brought up in Long Beach, she graduated from UC Berkeley, and studied dance in Austria and Czechoslovakia on a fellowship from the Institute for International Education. She and her husband lived briefly in the San Francisco Bay Area and then settled in Rolling Hills in 1941. In addition to serving on the board of Los Angeles Beautiful, she chaired its 25th anniversary celebration. She served as a director of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and was on the advisory council of the South Coast Air Quality Management District. She was also on the boards of the Rolling Hills Community Assn., Marymount College, Caballeros and the South Coast Botanic Garden, and was founding co-organizer of the Saturday Conservatory of Music. In 1985 she was named YWCA South Bay Woman of the Year and in 1988 Citizen of the Year by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary.
