Ice Dogs Win One in Shootout

Dan Lambert’s shootout goal gave the Ice Dogs a 3-2 victory over Kansas City before an announced 964 at the Sports Arena Friday night.

Tied, 2-2, after regulation, the teams were tied in the shootout, 2-2, until Lambert’s decisive goal.

The Ice Dogs were outshot, 42-26, but led for most of the first two periods. Kay Whitmore’s 40 saves were one short of his season high and drew praise from Ice Dog Coach John Van Boxmeer, who openly criticized his goaltenders earlier this season.

“I’ll tell you what I like, I like the fact that we have only given up six goals in the last five games,” Van Boxmeer said.

With two consecutive victories over Kansas City, the Ice Dogs (29-26-1) are still in fourth place in the IHL’s Southwest Division and in sixth place in the Western Conference playoff seedings, one point behind the Chicago Wolves.

“I thought the line of Rob Kenny, Wayne Strachan and John Lilley dominated,” Van Boxmeer said.

Indeed, the three were everywhere with Kenny feeding Strachan for the Ice Dogs’ first goal.
