A SHINING LIGHT

It was such a pleasure to read Stan Rice’s poem “Censorship” (Feb. 11).
I had the fortune to study under Rice, many years ago, at San Francisco State. Those of us wrestling with poetry were lucky enough to experience Rice’s passion for “vividness and clarity” and keep it with us throughout our careers.
Thank you for the chance to reread an honored, inspirational poet. His teaching and writing shaped my own teaching and writing. Just as he honed our sight to see the thing that shines, it’s reassuring to know his poetry is “shining” yet.
