A 35-year-old transient was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a 10-year-old boy in the back, police said Sunday.

Police allege that Robert Ray Summers stabbed the boy about 10 p.m. Saturday near 1st Street after being involved in an altercation with several people on the beach. The attack on the boy, however, was apparently unprovoked, police said.

Summers was arrested shortly after the attack as he was walking on a bike path near the San Gabriel River. Police said he matched witnesses’ descriptions of the boy’s assailant.

The boy, who was with his family at the time of the assault, was treated at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, where he stayed overnight for observation, police said. He was released Sunday. Police declined to release the boy’s name because he is a juvenile.

Police have asked that anyone with information on the incident call them at (310) 431-2541.
