Red Wings Set Record With This Victory

Another night, another record for the Detroit Red Wings.

Steve Yzerman scored twice and assisted on another goal Sunday, leading Detroit over the Winnipeg Jets, 5-2, at Winnipeg, Canada.

Detroit set a team record with 104 points, one more than in 1992-93. And the Red Wings got their 23rd road victory, also a team record.

“The main objective is to win a Stanley Cup. Anything other than that won’t be good enough,” defenseman Marc Bergevin said.

The Jets were missing Alexei Zhamnov, who has a bruised back, and Eddie Olczyk, out the rest of the regular season because of a knee injury.

“We’ve played them before with full lineups and we’ve played them pretty tough,” Winnipeg Coach Terry Simpson said. “We’ve got to play them better than that.”

Winnipeg was just one for seven on the power play.

“It’s a different power play because of the injuries,” Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman said.

“We were more like outsiders watching them skate,” Winnipeg captain Kris King said.

Tim Taylor, Paul Coffey, Keith Primeau also scored for Detroit, which completed a 4-0 road trip.

New Jersey 3, Philadelphia 2--Steve Thomas knocked home a rebound on a power play at Philadelphia as the Devils got their second overtime victory of the weekend.

Thomas also won Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh.

Phil Housley assisted on all three goals, all on power plays.

Kjell Samuelsson was whistled for high sticking with 2:33 left in overtime. Housley barely kept the puck in the Flyers’ zones, and his slap shot was stopped by goalie Garth Snow. But Thomas was in front for the rebound.

Boston 4, Florida 1--Adam Oates and Todd Elik each had a goal and an assist at Miami to help the Bruins earn their third consecutive victory.

The Panthers have lost four in a row and are 0-6-1 in their past seven games. Boston closed within one point of eighth-place Montreal in the race for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff berth.

The Bruins converted their first two power-play chances and scored all their goals in the opening 23 minutes. Florida was 0-for-7 on power plays against goaltender Bill Ranford, who stopped 32 shots.

San Jose 6, Buffalo 4--The Sharks scored five times in the third period, including Ray Sheppard’s game-winner, in a come-from-behind victory at San Jose.

The teams combined for six goals in the first 11:05 of the period, the last five coming in a 6:28 stretch.

Buffalo has lost four straight games after a stretch during which it went 4-0-1.

Tampa Bay 1, Washington 0--The Lightning’s Daren Puppa made 28 saves to earn his second consecutive shutout in a game featuring the NHL’s hottest two goalies.

While Puppa added to his scoreless streak, John Cullen scored at 1:42 of the first to end Washington goalie Jim Carey’s streak of two consecutive shutouts and 176 scoreless minutes.

Puppa, who missed a start Thursday against the New York Rangers for the birth of his second child, shut out the Chicago Blackhawks in his last start. He has gone 140 minutes, 26 seconds without giving up a goal.
