Students to Gather for Energy Day ’96

More than 500 high school students from Ventura and Santa Barbara counties will have a chance Wednesday to try on hazardous materials suits, get a close look at oil field equipment and meet a dog that sniffs out drugs for the oil industry.

These are some of the activities planned for Energy Day ’96 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, an event organized by the American Petroleum Institute, an oil producers industry group.

“We want to let students know about our industry,” said Bob Peterson of API. “We employ a lot of people, and we want to let students know about professional opportunities.”

For the afternoon, Energy Day organizers have planned a series of technical presentations, including one for industry professionals about the Carpinteria oil field.

The day will be capped by a fund-raiser barbecue dinner with a keynote address by Joyce Kennedy, director of the California State University Ventura County campus, during which winners of a total of $20,000 in scholarships will be announced.

The scholarships include $12,000 from the California Coastal Chapter of API, $4,000 from the Society of Petroleum Engineers and $4,000 from Cal Lutheran University, and will help students pay for college tuition or vocational training.
