George Burns’ Timing Was Always in Step

Share

My George Burns story: A few years ago, when I was researching my one-man play on Al Jolson, I had the opportunity to interview George Burns late one afternoon in his home.

The maid let me in and indicated that I should wait for him in the living room. The room was totally dark, thus I did not see that there was a step down. I took it and fell flat onto my face.

I was OK, and a few minutes later, Mr. Burns appeared. Not a word was said about my little accident. He was very gracious, funny and gave me some great Jolson stories, in which he was often the butt of the joke.

When it was time to leave, he shook my hand and casually led me to the back door. “No steps here,” he said with a friendly smile.

The only four-letter word that George Burns knew was L-O-V-E: love for his wife; love for his work; and most important of all, love (respect) for himself in that he didn’t need to use the common four-letter words that are used these days to pass for humor. His and Gracie’s humor has stood the test of time. Just turn off that boob tube on Saturday nights and turn on KNX. It is just still so good.

He will be sorely missed. Thank you, George, for your wonderful performances that enriched our lives.
